As the sun rose on July 3, 1863, two battered armies regrouped after two days of massive and inconclusive fighting near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had gained what he considered a series of partial successes and remained committed to the attack. Major General George Meade’s Army of the Potomac persisted in their defense of Cemetery Ridge. Far from being an anti-climactic day, the third day at Gettysburg still held the battle’s fate in the balance.
