Description:
The art critic David Sylvester described Clatworthy’s work as 'the best thing I have seen by any English sculptor younger than [Henry] Moore'. After the Slade, Robert Clatworthy was snapped up by Erica Brausen's influential Hanover Gallery, showing alongside Giacometti, Germaine Richier, Cesar, Francis Bacon and Picasso. His unique, vigorously impressionistic style resulted in the powerful early Cats, Bulls and Horsemen bronzes, rapidly modelled in wet plaster in a seemingly abstract way, but with a figurative result. Although Clatworthy is best known as one of the greatest animal sculptors, the later near abstract Heads and Figures are amongst his most original and successful sculptures. Less well known are the excellent drawings and paintings of Heads and Figures. These were always artworks in their own right and never studies for sculpture.
