A new paperback edition of Kelly's study which argues that Chaucer was the inventor of modern tragedy at a time when the genre and even the word `tragedy' were little used. Much of the argument is based on a close reading of Troilus and Criseyde and comparison is made with other tragedians such as Boccacio. Kelly finally traces the influence of Chaucer through the works of the 16th century.
