Description:
The third volume in the series of final reports on excavations at the Greek city of Nemea focuses on coins recovered by the University of California (1973-1995), the University of Cincinnati (1924-1926) and by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1935-6, 1962, 1964). Unusually for such a site, the vast majority of the 4,092 coins have secure archaeological contexts and are identifiable, providing valuable dating evidence for dating, for the use of certain structures, for the finances of the city, for trade and for identification of travellers. Clusters of certain types of coins, and the absence of others, are also discussed for what they reveal about social behaviour. The majority of the coins date from the heyday of the site during the early Hellenistic period when the Nemean Games were at their height; the discussion plots the distribution of the coins around the key areas such as the Sanctuary of Zeus, the roads and the stadia. The extensive discussion is followed by an illustrated catalogue of the coins, including the early Christian and later coins, which forms the bulk of the study.
