Description:
The necropolis surrounding Merenre’s pyramid complex in South Saqqara remains largely unexplored to this day. It is located south of Pepi 1´s complex and southwest of Djedkare’s pyramid and contains important evidence from the late 6th Dynasty of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. Several tombs of officials who served during the reign of Pharaoh Merenre were uncovered here in 2021-2022 by the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt. These structures represent typical family tombs of the Late Old Kingdom, built of mud bricks and featuring numerous shaft burials. While a detailed assessment of the tombs is still ongoing, this publication presents seven fully documented decorated burial chambers. It showcases a range of decorative themes related to the funerary beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, such as offerings and grave goods, which are characteristic of the decorated burial chambers of this period. The good state of preservation of these chambers provides a detailed and vivid insight into the work of Egyptian artists.
