Description:
George Tute is a painter, printmaker, wood engraver, illustrator, ceramic artist and teacher. born in Hull, Yorkshire, educated at Baines Grammar School in Lancashire and studied at Blackpool School of Art from 1949-53, the Royal Academy Schools from 1953-58 (under Sir Henry Rushbury and Peter Greenham), Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and the Royal College Art from 1982-83 (under Sir Quentin Blake). He taught from 1960-88, first at York School of Art where he met his wife Iris Stoltenberg-Lerche, and from 1962 at the West of England College of Art, subsequently becoming a Faculty of the University of the West of England where he was a principal lecturer in graphic design and director of studies.Tute’s portfolio would be considered both large and varied by all who have visited his studio. It is perhaps through the publication of commissioned wood engravings that he is best known, however this is only one of the skills he uses to express his creativity. He has worked largely in oils throughout his career and continues to do so, he has also worked extensively in wood engraving, watercolour, silk-screen, etching and ceramic.Tute develops allegories, which he may explore over a number of works, in various media and some, over a lifetime. They are rarely done and dusted, nor can they be. When your back is turned another layer is added or removed. George is neither a linear nor a static artist, any more than he is solely a painter, engraver or ceramic artist. He is an elected Member of the Royal West of England Academy, a Member of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and was the first Chairman of the revived Society of Wood Engravers.
